for Prof. Andreas Hogan, 2nd edition
The book publication accompanying the H(OMMAGE) project. After 32 years, typography professor Andreas Hogan ended his teaching career at Hochschule Trier in 2022. The two-part project H(OMMAGE) / 100H was created in his honor and consists of an exhibition and a book publication. Many students, student council members and alumni wanted to plan something special to bid farewell to and honor Prof. Hogan. The original idea was a book filled with typographic variations of the letter H alongside personal texts – each individually created by colleagues, alumni and his students. Through the help of many current and former students, the project quickly grew in scope. The Trier-based Studio Sowieso had heard about the project (codename H) and – a happy coincidence – had a free time slot at "Bühne", an old kiosk at the intersection of Saarstraße and Südallee in Trier used for exhibitions. The two undertakings – collecting specially designed letters for this book and programming the "Bühne" venue – could thus be combined well. This posed a scheduling challenge, since extremely short deadlines had to be set for all participants. In total, we compiled a list of 475 people made up of colleagues, alumni and students. Exactly 100 H (another happy coincidence) reached us within the short deadline. With a bit more time, there would certainly have been many more. The book is a plain, small-format volume of 272 pages, available in a hardcover and a softcover version, with covers letterpress-printed using a typeface from Hochschule Trier's letterpress workshop. The entire book is set in a typographic classic that frequently appeared in Mr. Hogan's own matter-of-fact templates – Frutiger. We asked all participants to send in a specially drawn H (inspired by a particularly iconic coffee mug in constant use by Prof. Hogan, decorated with a condensed capital H) along with a personal accompanying text. Since the exhibition at "Bühne" would take place several months before the book's planned publication, and the book was still meant to be a surprise, we reserved the personal dedications (and a few special Hs) for the book. To achieve a harmonious overall impression, we decided together with Studio Sowieso to produce all the Hs using the studio's risograph. Our heartfelt thanks go to Andreas Twardzik, who independently covered the entire cost of paper, printing and the opening. Within a tight timeframe, we printed all the letters together, set aside one copy of the printed series as a keepsake for Prof. Hogan, and put together the exhibition. Special thanks go to Philipp Kern and Christine Rudi of Studio Sowieso for their dedication, to Sascha Timplan for music and technical support, and to everyone who attended the event and helped create a wonderful shared memory. Prof. Andreas Hogan taught at Hochschule Trier's Paulusplatz location in Trier's city center from 1990 to 2022. Over 32 years, he significantly shaped the Department of Design, and above all the Communication Design program – not least as its program director. His teaching was marked by respectful conduct, thoughtful and considered critiques, an infallible eye for typographic detail, and a view not only of where we stood as students, but of where we could stand. Throughout, students' eyes for quality design were consistently trained. At its core, alongside the question "What is good?" always stood the question "Why is it good?". Prof. Hogan supervised more than 400 bachelor's and master's theses during his time at Hochschule Trier. He motivated over a thousand students to find their path toward type design, typography and contemporary graphic design. He helped those who had the privilege of learning from him to overcome their own doubts, to discover where their individual talents lay, and ultimately to find and pursue their own creative path. We say thank you.
