New identity for the BMFTR research project IWM – individual & interest-based knowledge transfer in museums.

The project's goal is to improve mediation at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit for a broad audience. To this end, newly developed IWM terminals are being installed in the exhibition spaces, enabling an individual and adaptive presentation of content. The displays adapt to the age, prior knowledge and available time of users: children from age 4 receive age-appropriate texts and interactive elements, while pupils or adults receive differentiated levels of language. More than twenty versions offer compact or detailed information – from basic knowledge to specialist content from current publications. This allows researchers to work in depth, while playful learning for children takes place at the same terminal.

To promote inclusion, the terminals are designed to be low-barrier and allow flexible adaptation of image, text and audio output. The project is part of a BMBF research initiative examining the adaptability, impact and benefit of individual knowledge transfer. The insights gained are intended to be applied in other museums and exhibitions in the future.
